  • Thorrablot - In whole February
    Mid-winter festival of Viking heritage with plenty of singing, dancing and traditional
     foods.
  • Bolludagur (Buns Day) - 11.02.2004
    Two days before Lent, bakeries overflow with cream puffs. Children wake up early before their parents and "beat" them out of bed with "bun wands". Parents are obliged to give the children one cream bun for every "blow" received.
     
  • Spredigadur (Bursting Day) & Ash Wednesday - 12.02.2004 - 13.02.2004
    Bursting day, when Icelanders feast on a hearty dish of salted meats and peas-tradition goes individuals eat until they reach bursting point. Ash Wednesday, children pin small bags of ash on to peoples' clothing as a prank, and go begging for treats around the streets.
     
  • National Beer Day - 01.03.2004
    The anniversary of the lifting of a 75-year prohibition of beer (other alcoholic beverages were permitted long before). Celebrations are held at pubs, restaurants and clubs.
     
  • First Day of Summer - 25.04.2004
    Parades, sporting events, entertainments.
     
  • Light Nights. Reykjavik - During June and August
    Live theater, Icelandic sagas, historical events, folklore and music. Performed in English at the Tjarnarbio Theater.
     
  • Sheep Roundup - 15.09.2004 - 16.09.2004
    Festivities focused on bringing the sheep down from the highland pastures for the winter season.
     
  • Reykjavík Christmas Market - In December
    Icelandic specialties such as hangikjot (smoked lamb), venison, goose and laufabred (deep-fried, paper-thin bread) and cream cakes are laid out in the extravagant Christmas buffets to be found in the city’s restaurants throughout December.
     
  • New Year’s Eve. Reykjavik - 31.12.2004
    Fireworks light up the harbor in the European capital closest to the U.S.

  • Arctic Open Golf International Tournament. Akureyri - During June
    International 36-hole golf tournament held among snowcapped mountains. Night-time play lit by the midnight sun.
     
  • Seafarers' Day - 03.06.2004
    Swimming, rowing, sea rescues and other competitions.
     
  • Independence Day - 17.06.2004
    Parades, speeches, sport competitions, outdoor entertainment and dancing. Iceland became independent of Denmark in 1944.
