Combines fado, Portugal’s most traditional soul music, with a "guest musical form" from another port city. Last year it was sea chanties derived from British and American sailors.

- Festival of the Crosses. Barcelos - During April
Celebrates the miraculous appearance in 1504 of a large cross marked across fields outside this northern city. Handicrafts, concerts, fireworks.

On Magic Night (Dec. 31), free spectacles in Lisbon, staged near the Tagus, in the waterfront zone between Parque das Nacoes and Alges. Also, in Funchal, Madeira, a spectacular fireworks display lights up the sky, and parties take place throughout the island in restaurants, bars and the streets.

Hundreds of thousands of Catholics descend on Our Lady of Fátima Basilica to mark the anniversary of the first of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Candlelight procession on the 12th, followed the next day by commemoration of the 1917 apparition of the Virgin Mary.
