SOS Mitmensch Oberosterreich EVS Project Title: Home for refugees E-mail:Mitmensch.heim@sos.at Location: Linz - Austria
The "Fluchtlingsheim Rudolfsstrasse" is a project by SOS Mitmensch
Oberosterreich, which, in this case works together with "Caritas der Diozese
Linz". In 1996 on the first of July the home was opened. On an average it
offers place for 50 refugees who cannot be deported but are not officially
cared for (so called non-refoulement-persons). Among them there are refugees
who are waiting for the verdict concerning their plea for asylum, or
refugees who in spite of a negative verdict cannot be deported due to the
political situation in their origin country (eg civil war) and others who
are waiting for immigration in the USA. These refugees obviously neither
have legal residence nor working permit. We provide them with board and
lodging and pocket money to cover their most essential living costs. During
their stay in our home-while their personal future is to be clarified- the
refugees are counseled by social workers as well as by legal advisors. There
are two employees, one conscientious objector, some volunteers and 10
porters an night-shift. The whole project is financed through grants from
the provincial government, the city of Linz and was supported through a
grant from the European Union in the first year.

The target group of the centre are
people in the age of 10 to 18, most of them coming from migrant families
(Turkey, Balkany). 80 % of the visitors are male. The role of the volunteer
should mainly be to offer his/her special skills to young people, connected
to and co-ordinated with the usual program of the centre. The activities of
the volunteer will be: - to support the staff in organizing leisure time
activities (sport, e.g. football, basketball etc. or parties), - to motivate
young people for the project work: video, dance, drama, arts, internet,
djing, ... - as the rooms of the centre are very small, a lot of activities
take place at the nearby surrounding (parks, on the streets), so called
detached youth work. Also the kids are accompanied by the staff to other
facilities (school gyms, climbing halls). - The centre runs a small "youth
cafe", opened three times a week, which is the most important communication
and meeting point. - Activities are from Tuesday to Saturday, during the
whole year, but with special events and programs (camps, international youth
exchange) during summer time. More detailed activities will be arranged with
the volunteer, once we get to know him/her. Workings hours will be Tuesday
to Friday in the afternoon. Sometimes he/she has to work on Saturday as
well.

Organization:
Wagenschot Pedagogical Centre EVS Project Title: In the name of the game E-mail:school@wagenschot.be Location: Eke-Nazareth - Gent - Belgium
The volunteer will go on a search for existing useable games and adapt them
if necessary. Another task of the volunteer is the development of new games.
On a longer term it might be interesting to develop games about actual
themes in the school (e.g. 1 theme a year), like on drugs, assertivity,
teasing, … There are different moments when games can be organised: on one
hand as a filling-in of free moments, e.g. during recreation moments in
school, during free hours between lessons, on Wednesday afternoon for the
youngsters staying in the MPI, after school during the daycare, during
school holidays. On the other hand, the volunteer should be involved in
participating with excursions and events together with teachers or educators
and bring in game elements. Preparation moments - Search for existing games
and adaptation of them if necessary - Development of new games- Preparation
of events or excursions - Language course We want to give the volunteer
enough time to find his way and to integrate. In the beginning we will
include him in regular activities to get acknowledged with the target group
and the possibilities. The volunteer will have the occasion on meetings with
staff to share previous experience in e.g. youth work, travel, sports,…. We
will also appoint a mentor teacher and a mentor educator to immerse him in
the daily practice. We foresee a local training by experts in the
educational possibilities of games. One of the youngsters will be
responsible to guide him in their social environment. We will gradually
switch to own initiative. We will offer the volunteer all chances to follow
further training outside Wagenschot. The volunteer will be constantly
supported by the "intervention team". This is a team of 4 educators who are
responsible for the preconditions within the pedagogical centre. Their job
is mainly to isolate problem and conflict situations from regular activities
such as lessons and recreations. They solve these problems and conflicts by
searching together with the youngster for personal focuses and individual
methods. This is really a strong team of support who knows all the
youngsters very well. Next to that there is a teacher who takes care of
recreation activities 1 hour a week. Close co-operation with her is evident.
- This part of his tasks will evolve from 100% the first 2 months till 30%
afterwards. Recreation moments The fixed recreation moments in the school
are: - in the morning: 8.30 to 9, 10.40 to 10.55 - noon: 13.00 - 13.35 -
afternoon: 15.20 - 15.35 The recreation moments should be filled with short
activities / games. - This part of his tasks will be 20% of his time after
the preparation period. Free hours Can be every day for different hours. One
school hour is 50 minutes. It happens that youngsters have no class for
different hours a day. These moments are really difficult for them. They
have to stay in class, get bored, start challenging each other or the
teacher doing the supervision. We hope with the volunteer that we would be
able to offer the youngsters games during these hours or bring in something
from his country (e.g. a song in a foreign language, dances, tinker…). This
could be a personal project of the volunteer, next to the idea of making
games based on a theme (drugs, teasing, assertivity, …). - This part of his
tasks covers approximately 30% of his time after the preparation period.
Events, excursions and day-care activities Preparation together with
teachers and educators of the excursions. If it fits, we could include game
elements with the idea to learn while playing. Next to that there is also 1
sports day a year, competitions, cultural trips, theatre shows… in which the
volunteer will participate. This part of his tasks covers approximately 20%
of his time after the preparation period. Example of a weekly timetable -
Daily: start at 8.30 till after noon recreation: 15.35 - Briefing moment on
Wednesday afternoon with the intervention team or the teacher responsible
for the weekly hour recreation activities. - The volunteer can follow a
language course Dutch during the day. This will be half a day per week. -
The volunteer is allowed to have 1 month holidays per year, preferably taken
during school holidays.
First of all, the volunteer will
be involved in thinking about the concept. He/she will be assisting the IT-staffmember
in installing the computers and thinking how to communicate this to the
patients. The project is very new, so lots of input will be asked from the
volunteer. This will take an average of about 20% of the time: thinking,
implementing, evaluating, adapting. 50% The volunteer will be mainly
involved in educating the patients and setting up the project. He will be
assisting the IT-staffmember of the centre in teaching the patients. 1) how
to work with the computer 2) how to handle the internet, 3) how to use the
E-mail. He will do this in 2 locations: 1) several departments of the
hospital (every department asks a different approach) 2) patient house
'Passant' where former patients stay before they move back into society.
This is a sort of community house where also one multimedia computer is
available. 30% The volunteer will also supervise an internet cafe. Once the
concept is there and the people are educated, they can simply come to the
multimedia computers and use the internet and E-mail. The volunteer will be
helping out and guiding where necessary. Evening work: now and then there
will be evening work: This is decided together with the volunteer and is
always compensated during the week. The volunteer will be free during the
day when he works in the evening and this will be restricted to a maximum of
2 times a month. Working dring the weekend: once a while there will be
weekend work. This is decided with the volunteer and will be compensated
during the week. This will be restricted to once a month. Working hours: 7
hours a day, 5 days a week (35 hours a week) The volunteer will have 2
holidays a month.
Choice of a wide range of tasks:
Alfabetisation in English, in very small groups, 2-3 people, basic
conversation lessons French or English (according to the background of the

Hoeselt. Their task is to talk about things that are important for children
like trafic safety, playgrounds, environment... The topics are chosen by the

and create activities and campagnes to prevent the use of drugs. The
volunteer can participate in the platform and assist in organising the
anti-drug activities. 3) Organisation of a Group Exchange Programme (5%) The
volunteer can help work out the programme of the group exchange. Being a
foreigner in belgium he/she will have plenty of good ideas of what could eb
interesting to do in a group exchange. IMPORTANT is that the volunteer will
be guided throughout these activities by the youth consultant and the other
volunteers that are active in the youth centre. The volunteer will have
certain respobsabilities but will never carry end responsability for an
activity. He/she will receive sufficient training to be able to perform the

The objective of the Diaconal Year
is the promotion of Voluntary Service within the social associations and
institutions in order to promote cooperation in the social field between
professionals and non-professionals, volunteers, unpaid voluntary workers,
the families, associations, - remembering the values of tolerance,
solidarity, responsibility and respect for other people, as a basis of
community life. - providing the opportunity for young people to become aware
of other cultures, for their professional and work training and for social
and international relations moving towards justice and peace - providing
young people at a turning point in their lives the option of taking their
bearings, of discovering their limitations and their options, to raise their
self-esteem through working for the public good, to gain practical and solid
experience of solidarity. The Maison de retraite "Les GABRES" (Les GABRES
Old People's Home) is an institution housing 230 old people, of whom 155 are
having a course of medical treatment. The associated project is to
facilitate a life as full as possible for each resident. Its geographical
position in the centre of the town of Cannes, surrounded by parks and served
by frequent public transport facilitates a great awareness of both the
district and the town. Description of the activities : The activities of the
Volunteer are above all a necessary luxury, although not indispensable. The
Old People's Home provides every day a vast choice of varied activities -
from the simple recreational afternoon up to activities much more specific
such as memory, floral art, sewing. The Volunteer participates in this life,
as a mentor, subject to the responsibility of the organizer. This privileged
position is very much appreciated by the pensioners who perceive a young
person and like to hear about her plans and her past life as well as her
accent. Similarly, the Volunteer unearths the stories of lives that would
better allow her to understand the place where she has come to live for some
months and, above all, understand a different generation. At the "Les GABRES
Old People's Home, the volunteer could assist either the external or the
internal organizers during specific sessions (pottery, painting, floral art,
theatre, singing, pastry-making, etc.) - Mentoring a certain number of
residents when they move about, subject to the responsibility of the
institution organizer (helping with walking, helping with various shopping,
assistance during excursions). The Volunteer will be a mentor permitting a
larger number of people to participate in the entertainments offered. She

end.

Jugendbildungswerk EVS Project Title: Assistant to the European bureau of the city of
Frankfurt am Main E-mail:
matthias.roos.europabuero@stadt-frankfurt.de Location: Frankfurt am Main - Germany
One of the intended projects of the
office to present Frankfurt as an "Eurocity", to serve the community of
Frankfurt, its foreign inhabitants and the international visitors, will be
the build-up and fostering of an calendar dedicated to all kinds of events
in and around Frankfurt with European reference. The idea was born at the
end of 1998 and given into the responsibility of two staff members to start
with sometimes halfway through 1999. When it came to decide which kind of
project would be an attractive one for a young person who is wishing to work
for some time in another country, the "calendar-project" seemed to be the
most interesting one; the office had to offer. It furthermore might become a
project that could be permanently worked and influenced by a volunteer of
the EVS program: Thus the "calendar-project" may take advantage of different
cultural background and point of view of European volunteers. The manner of
project implementation and time frame is still open and will be discussed
and developed mainly by the two responsible staff members and the volunteer,
naturally in co-ordination with the office. A major task especially at the
beginning will be the collection, selection and evaluation of relevant
information. The volunteer will have the chance to get in contact with
museums, cinemas, administrations, operas, fairs, exhibitions, tourist
offices, radio stations and any kind of institutions that provide or inform
about events. Newspapers, city-magazines and the inter-net will be important
media to work with. The information then will be processed and converted
into a publishable shape with the intention to offer it on a self-made
homepage on the internet. Once a base has been created the calendar has to
be continuously updated and improved. The volunteer will be working 4 to 5
days per week during office hours, except times of language courses, EVS
seminars and other events of interest to the Frankfurt based volunteers that
will be organized by the "Jugendbildungswerk", the overall "care-taking"
institution for volunteers coming to Frankfurt. A week-plan of regular tasks
could be: Monday: 09.00 to 11.15 Language course 13.00 to 15.00 open for
discussion and exchange with one or both of the involved staff members 15.00
to 17.00 processing of information Thursday: 08.30 to 12.30 collection of

surfing the internet, and/or searching and visiting institutions or other
sources of information Processing of information means to sort, select,
evaluate, put down in writing, discuss information and to prepare a frame of
presentation To get acquainted with the overall work of the office and of
other staff members the volunteer will participate in team meetings, work
related out of office events, visits to institutions, etc. The volunteer
should take part in lunch break with working colleagues at least one or two
times a week It might be favorable for evaluation purposes that the
volunteer once and a while visits certain cultural or similar events that
seem to be important for the calendar during out of office times when
approved by the head of office.
The “Computer Adventure” project focus is on helping the young people who
live those areas, to work with New Technologies and get information about
many subjects.
The European volunteers, under the guidance and help of TES’s people, will
work together with our youngsters, and they will help them to get in touch
with the European Dimension & New Technologies and to inform them about how
to search for new possibilities in the field of Education, Employment,
Entertainment, etc.
They will help our people to inform the young Greek people, especially the
people with less opportunities (we have many emigrants, unemployed and
families with many children), about all the actions of the “Youth” Program.
The volunteers will help the young people in Piraeus city to open new
horizons.
It is really important for the youngsters who live in a place like Piraeus
(The biggest port in Greece), to have information about the opportunities
they have, to open discussions about this and help them.
The Young Voluntary workers undertake to participate voluntarily in an
active citizen and informative experience with the aim of acquiring social,
intercultural and personal skills, enabling them to lay the foundation for
their own future and at the same contribute to the well being of the
community.
They will work five days a week, 30 hours total, that is, 6 hours a day for
each volunteer.
They will visit youth collectives, Universities and other “youth points”, to
get in contact with the young citizens in Athens and Piraeus, also in some
Greek islands, communicate and discuss with them and help them by giving
information about new possibilities for Education, Employment,
Entertainment, Youth Activities, etc.
During their project, the volunteers will also participate in the hosting
organization’s activities
The “Walkabout Computers” project focus is on helping the young people who
live our area to work with New Technologies and get information about many

about integrating the young people in our area into the European Programs
and informing the young Greek civilians, about the “Youth” Program and
especially about European Voluntary Service and its tasks.
The volunteers, under the guidance and help of Hienet’s people, will help
the youngsters of the Institute and of other areas, to get in touch with the
European Dimension and inform them about all the details and aspects of the
E.V.S. projects.
Most of the time during the project, will be dedicated to information tasks
into the youth who are interested in the programme, and tell them about
their own experience, what they have gained by it and encourage them to take
part in an E.V.S. adventure or to be “Volunteers” in General.
The volunteers will help the youngsters in our city on the discovery of
knowledge, new challenges and open new horizons for them, that an E.V.S

In a place like Athens or a Greek island, that E.V.S. is not so well known,
however it is really important, to have young, volunteers, willing to inform
the youngsters about this opportunity, to promote European Voluntary Service

The main duties would be:
1. Helping with the Youth Enquiries Service. After initial training and
briefing, the volunteer would provide information, by -phone and by staffing
the enquiries desk, to local people who need information about housing,
jobs, training opportunities, benefits etc. 2. Helping with youth club
activities for local young people (mostly aged 12-25) who use the youth
centre. These are usually evening activities. The youth centre has a TV room
and a large room for group activities. Some of its working fields will be
the international youth information and orientation, mainly in the frame of
the European Union. Volunteers from other European countries can help the
office in order to offer profound information about what is happening abroad
in this sector. Also the activities through youth programmes of the EU
(Youth, Leonardo Socrates, EQUAL etc.) could be a subject for the
volunteers. The volunteers will cooperate with the local authorities and the
cultural, environmental and youth associations. Organizing of cultural
events involving directly young people and preserving the cultural heritage
A typical working hours timetable for the volunteers will be from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. during the morning or from 4 to 8 p.m. during the afternoon. They
will have 5 days a week. In summer it could happen that the duration of
certain project activities (special events, festivals, etc.) shall require a
more flexible participation, for example during the night hours and during
weekends), in this case the volunteers will get free days during the week.
So there is work during weekends because of some cultural activities to be
organised by the Youth Information Office or by the Youth Centre. The
volunteers will have two weeks holidays in the six months service.

Corinth at the beginning of December 1998. Some of its working fields will
be the international youth information and orientation, mainly in the frame
of the European Union. Volunteers from other European countries can help the
office in order to offer profound information about what is happening abroad
in this sector. Also the activities through youth programs of the EU (like

for the volunteers. 2. Collaboration in the foundation process of the
central Youth Centre in Corinth: The volunteers will collaborate in working
groups of young people during the planning and the construction phase of the
building, which is located in a beautiful seaside place on the beach of the
Corinthian Golf. The building is an old public store house (it belongs to
the Prefecture of Korinthia) and it’s planned to be completely renovated.
After its construction the volunteers will participate in the organization
of the Youth Centre. A typical working hours time table for the volunteers
will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the morning and from 5 to 9 p.m.
during the afternoon. It could happen that the duration of some certain
project activities shall require a more flexible participation, for example
during the night hours and during weekends. Because of the fact, that young
people have free time mainly during the afternoon and evening hours, the
volunteers should be prepared to work in the late hours. They will have 5
days week and if there is work during weekends they will get the free days
on the weekdays. It could be that they have to work on Greek holidays, if
there are some cultural activities to be organized by the Youth Information

About the foundation, the aim of
the foundation "Szinek Vilaga Alapitvany-World of Colours Foundation for
Children" is to promote the visual education developing the creativity of
children , to ensure the operation of institutions and kindergartens
employing such methods and to organize exhibitions related and promote
artistic activities on this field. Its further aim is to help developing the
artistic abilities of children and to help the teachers and artists on this
field. History of the Kindergarten World of Colours Foundation for Children
On 15 September 1997 has established -in order to realize the aim put down
in the memoranda- the kindergarten as St. Clementine Kindergarten &
Preschool on the hill Testverhegy-Jablonka ut 126/B, H-1037 in a woodland.
We are fortunate to be in a nice private house which has own large garden.
The building of the kindergarten is a split - level house , on the lower
storey there are the kitchen and the dining - room , on the upper storey the
room is the playing area and the balcony. Our school is sponsored by the R.
Catholic Virgin Mary Society. Activities The children are spending the
greatest part of the time /depending on the weather/ in the open air /plays
activities , meals, relaxation/ . Due to the local circumstances the
children going to our kindergarten can be educated in a healthy environment
. The experiences being attainable for children living in a town -
environment very hardly are at us everyday ones. To these belong the
observation of the livings in the nature , paying attention to the rotation
of seasons , with the possibility of acquiring a lot of experiences. In our
program offered for the children there have an outstanding role education in
the visual , musical, eurithmical education. One of the important aims of
the kindergarten is developing manual skills and therefore the children get
handicraft training. We are accompanying the children to take part in some
sport :in spring to roller skate in winter to skate in summer to swim All of
the teachers are experienced, enthusiastic and empathic with the needs of
the children, in accordance with our aims and philosophy. Every year there
is a summer-hill- camp sponsored by the 3rd district City Council where 60
children are taking part in. In 1999 the foundation established the Szinek

helping out in Cacao-bar. !!! None of these jobs are administrative,
employment substitution or for profit. !!! It/s difficult for us to give a
final or unchangable plan for the work of the EVS-volunteers, because of the
way we work. Our work changes with the seasons and with the demands and/or
requirements of our clients and superiors. Our main aim is to be there for
young people (target group), facilitate their wishes and help them to
realize their dreams, and these aims guide our practice. Our work ethic: ·
When having young people working for us in the House (and we/ve had a few
hundred of them working here on the premises in the last 5-6 years), no
matter if they/re icelandic or from other countries, we see the
work/employment here as a possibility for growth and development for the
young person. That means that there will always be a progression from simple
tasks to more complicated ones, according to the training schedule and the
capabilities of the young person to do the tasks and to shoulder more
responsibilities. · In the abovementioned tasks, for the EVS-candidates,
there will always a progression from simpler tasks and a position of
observer /trainee, while learning how to handle situations and equipment, to
a position of co-worker with responsibility and know-how. But always the
final responsibility will lie with some member of the permanent staff, i.e.
we will not burden a young person in our charge with the final
responsibility of a project or work, that should rest with a fully trained
staff-member. But where it/s logical and within the capabilities of the
young person they will get the opportunities to have responsibilities. · In
case the abovementioned tasks/ placements do not meet with the expectations
of the volunteers or if the volunteers do not meet our expectations in
growing into these tasks, we have possibilities to make changes within the
contract period to other tasks within the House or our organization. Working
hours: 1. 35 hours, generally from 09.00-16.00 Mon-Thu and 17.00-24.00
Fridays 2. Evening work (between 17.00-24.00), calculated into day-hours at
the same rate as other staff. The volunteer never works more than 35 hours
total each week. Holiday periods: 1. Easter holidays, ca. 10 days 2. In
summer, ca 10 days, at the request of volunteers when it suits them and the
organization. 3. Weekends

Volunteers will participate in the
activities promoted by the association, as, for instance, the organization
of special events as concerts, parties, debates, administrating the
different courses (ethnic music, Caribbean dances, etc.), running the
rehearsal room situated in the building open for members of the association,
running the Internet point; the volunteers will also be expected to promote
and organize events and activities related to their nationality (for example
dinner parties with typical national food or discussions about topics that
concern the given country). For example, concerning the organization of the
concerts, the tasks of the volunteers could be: to chose the band and keep
in touch with its members, to prepare the informative material about the
event. Moreover, the volunteers will be involved in the promotion and
diffusion of European projects, especially “Youth”, among the young members
of the association, the local realties of Castelfranco Veneto and the
neighboring villages, to give young people of the local community the
possibility of getting to know the opportunities offered by these programs.
To make information on the European projects known, an informative counter
has been created inside the Buenaventura association, available each week,
where young people who are interested can meet the volunteers and the
responsible for the centre, to receive information on “Youth” Program,
especially Action 2. This moment will be integrated through meetings with
experts in the European programs and with the diffusion of informative
material on this theme. Two other projects where the volunteers will be
involved are:1) The project “call for musician”, which has the aim of
hosting foreign artists in the buildings of the association in exchange for
a free concert. The task of the volunteers will be promoting the initiative
and finding contacts with people interested in it, using also their contacts
in their own country or of their sending organization2) The project “serate
letterarie”, promoted by the Buenaventura group, which foresee some thematic
nights with literature authors. In this case as well, the volunteer will be
required to participate in the activities for the organization of the event,
but also the choice of the authors and of the theme to be focused.
Volunteer’s help could be very useful to bring new ideas and contacts. The
volunteers will also participate in the everyday activities of the
organization, such as helping with the administration and the work of the
secretariat, giving information via e-mail and telephone. These tasks will
constitute about 10 % of the job of the volunteer. The volunteers themselves
will choose the sectors they will be mainly involved in, after a first
period of orientation, according to their own interests and skills. Due to
the characteristics of the association, the activities of the volunteer will
mainly take place in the afternoon – evening period and on weekends. The
volunteer can have two free days per week which cannot be Friday, Saturday
and Sunday - one of the free days will be Monday, the other one will be
chosen by the volunteer together with the persons responsible for him. The
volunteer can have some vacations at Christmas or Easter or in Summer; in
any case he should consult his tutor on taking days off so that it would not
interfere with the needs of the association. In the following you will find
a possible example of a typical day of the volunteer. Of course, the
activities can vary according to the given day, week, period and the
projects of the association.15.30-16.30Preparation of the space of the

Site: The work at the construction site usually starts at 8h30 a.m. and ends

will depend entirely on the way of the construction it self, it can be asked
to the volunteer for him to work on the pluming, on the electrical part, on
the framing, in the installation of dry wall, interior and exterior
painting, gardening or on the foundations. It will all depend of were we're
at in the construction process. The volunteer will not need to have
experience in construction. Habitat often works with volunteers that know
nothing about this trade. That's why we have specialized personnel at the
site that know about construction and above all know how to work with people
that do not know anything about this trade. These specialized personnel in
construction advise volunteers in what they will be doing, why they are
doing it and how it needs to be done. This is all done to prevent accidents
and also for the volunteer understand is work. Twice a week, the volunteers
will have Portuguese classes and once a week they will meet the volunteer
supervisor to talk about their week and their expectations.

activities would broaden. · The volunteer should work 30 hours per week. If
the volunteer works on Saturday or Sunday or holiday he will have the next

difficult nature of the individual work with just one user the volunteer
will always work in the group. · Beside being with the users the volunteer's
task is also: - Playing cards or chess with users - Conversation with the
users in English - Visiting cinema - Leading workshop - Excursions, sports

the work that should be done by the employees. It would mean a different

program wants to offer the volunteer a specific training on the European
institutions, the European programs for young people and the management of a
non profit association. At this stage the duties of the volunteer will
consist on the assistance to counseling at the Information Point on the
European programs and on the general management of the association. This

counsel associations about the European programs. The collaboration of the
volunteer won't last more than 30 hours weekly. He will cooperate with 8
other members of the association. In the first month the language training
will take place and the volunteer will attend a language course from Monday
