Dugan, President of IFHOH, from the USA (International Federation of Hard of Hearing People).

According to information supplied by the manufacturer, in addition to the traditional written text interpretation of a presenters¿ speeches that need to be followed on a screen, a computer will be available to convert speech into text in real-time. New methods of transferring information based on the use of the Internet have also been applied in the preparations for the congress.

To emphasize the significance of the poster exhibition, the best poster will receive an award. The exhibition of appliances will demonstrate both the latest personal aids to help the hard of hearing and the working methods made possible by new technology such as videoconferencing.
Arrangements on schedule
According to Seppo Matinvesi, Secretary General of the Congress, the arrangements for the congress are on schedule and the programme is already taking shape. He feels that the diversity of the programme and the quality of the exhibitions will be of interest to the hearing impaired, who are personally aware of the obstacles to communicating. He is also convinced that the programme will serve the professionals who work with the hard of hearing and that it will provide them with an excellent opportunity to update their knowledge. Due to the prevalence of impaired hearing, not only professionals working in specialized areas of the field but also those in education, social welfare, health care and, in particular, occupational health and employment services, whose work brings them in contact with the hearing impaired, need information about accessible communication. The hard of hearing find it difficult to locate the source of the sound so even the facilities have been planned to meet their needs.
The plenary sessions are scheduled to take place in the mornings and they will be followed by concurrent sessions and group work in the afternoons. There will be an opportunity for participants to meet and discuss with the expert speakers. There will be summaries in the early evenings. Everyone will gather under the same roof to receive reports from the workshops and concurrent sessions.

Equality and Disability Conference: Exploring the Challenge and Potential of Framework Directive 2000/78/EC
This conference is organised by the Disability Law and Policy Research Unit of the National University of Ireland (Galway) in conjunction with the Centre of Human Rights of the Catholic University of Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium). It seeks to draw together European research on discrimination law as applied to disability and to focus on the key thematic challenges posed by the EC Framework Directive 2000/78/EC in this field. The adoption of this Directive was the single most important juridical development ever achieved at European level in the field of disability. This conference will reflect on the general evolution towards the nondiscrimination model under international and comparative law in this field and on the kinds of values that should inspire the practical interpretation on the Framework Directive and thus achieve its full potential. The conference will be held in English & French, with simultaneous interpretation and sign interpretation from French.
