Identity card and Visa for studying in
Germany
Make enquiries from the German Consulate or ambassador in your home
country as to the necessary documentation for entering the country. The
German entrance regulations vary according to the nationality of the
student concerned. In any case you will need a valid ID card- most
commonly a passport. For those whose country of origin is within the
European Union, a national ID card is sufficient. International students
from eastern Europe need a visa for entrance into Germany. Visas are
available from the German diplomatic representative in your home country.
You will need a visa which entitles you to take up a study course
within Germany. DO NOT under any circumstances, travel in with just a
tourist visa! A tourist visa cannot be exchanged for a visa suitable for
studying within Germany.
As the issuing of a visa generally takes several weeks you should make
sure to apply early. If it becomes clear that you will not get your visa
